FIELD Heavy Equipment Mechanic

Job Location: Grand Prairie, Texas

Employment Type: Full Time, Non-Exempt

Compensation: DOE, Starting at $38/hour

Job Description:

We are seeking an experienced Heavy Equipment Mechanic to join our commercial/industrial grading team. This position is responsible for the inspection, diagnosis, repair, and preventative maintenance of a diverse fleet of heavy earthmoving equipment used in large-scale site development and grading projects.

Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain heavy construction equipment, including but not limited to:

    • 657 scrapers

    • Dozers

    • Excavators

    • Motor graders

    • Loaders

    • Compactors and haul trucks

  • Perform preventative maintenance and field service repairs to minimize downtime

  • Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic systems, electrical systems, diesel engines, and drivetrain components

  • Read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and diagnostic software

  • Perform welding and fabrication for equipment repairs and modifications

  • Maintain accurate service records and documentation

  • Ensure equipment meets safety and operational standards

  • Work closely with maintenance and field team to prioritize repairs and maintain project schedules

  • Respond to emergency breakdowns in shop and field environments

 

Qualifications & Skills:

  • 5+ years of experience as a heavy equipment mechanic (grading or earthwork experience preferred)

  • Strong background working on Caterpillar, John Deere, and similar heavy equipment

  • Proven experience with hydraulics, electrical systems, and diesel engines

  • Experience with diagnostic software and electronic control systems preferred

  • Valid CDL and current medical card 

  • Clean driving record

  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities

  • Self-motivated and able to work independently

  • Team-oriented with a positive attitude

  • Strong attention to detail and safety

Work Environment:

  • Exposure to active commercial and industrial construction sites with moving equipment, uneven terrain, dust, mud, noise, and varying weather conditions (heat, cold, wind, rain).

  • Shop environment may include exposure to fumes, oils, grease, solvents, and loud machinery.

  • Regular exposure to vibration from tools and equipment.

  • Work is performed around heavy machinery with moving mechanical parts.

  • Required use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, steel-toe boots, hearing protection, and high-visibility apparel.

 

Physical Demands & Requirements:

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, and work in confined or elevated spaces for extended periods.

  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50+ pounds regularly.

  • Manual dexterity to operate hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and welding equipment.

  • Ability to climb ladders and access heavy equipment components at various heights.

  • Visual acuity to read schematics, diagnostic screens, and equipment manuals.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in person and by phone or radio in high-noise environments.

 

Compensation:
Competitive hourly wage based on experience, with overtime opportunities and benefits package.

This position plays a critical role in keeping high-production grading equipment operational and minimizing downtime on large-scale earthmoving projects.
